Island-Inspired, Mission Driven: Meet Nanducket

At first glance, Nanducket is simply a sweet, island-inspired apparel and lifestyle brand for children. If you dig a bit deeper, you’ll find the driving mission behind the classic East Coast-style clothing, plush ducks and bunnies, and book. It is through their debut children’s book, Ack: The Nantucket Duckling, that Nanducket aims to instill values of unfailing kindness and unconditional acceptance from the start.

Nantucket holds a special place in the heart of Nanducket founder Kathrine Spurway, who was married on the tiny, picturesque island and spends family vacations there in the summertime. After experiencing facial paralysis due to Bell’s Palsy, Kathrine realized people treated her differently. Not wanting anyone else to feel this “otherness,” Kathrine thought of ways she could cultivate a culture of inclusion and celebrating differences for children and adults through her brand.

“From a certain perspective, the shape of the island of Nantucket, a beautiful spot off the coast of Cape Cod, looks a lot like a duck,” said Kathrine, who is a graduate of Harvard University and a certified instructor in Positive Parenting. “And so, a map of the island became the inspiration for the Nanducket brand. And of course, it only made sense that we would name the hero of our book – a young duckling – after Nantucket’s famous airport, ACK. When you wear the duck, you’re wearing a symbol of love and acceptance for all.”

Kathrine’s ultimate goal for Nanducket is to move the needle in creating awareness and funding for Social and Emotional Learning programs that promote self-confidence, inclusivity, and diversity. She finds motivation in touching testimonials from parents and children who relate to Ack’s plight.

Another vehicle for the Nanducket mission are heirloom plush ducks and bunnies handcrafted by Polish artisan Renata Paclawska. Each heirloom duck or bunny is made from fine velvet, chiffon, linen, and tulle. Every detail is lovingly crafted by Renata herself, and made in her studio which is filled with very special fabrics, buttons, beads, and other ornamentation. Every animal is utterly unique and wonderfully different – just like Ack. They make for treasured gifts that can be beautifully displayed in nurseries and playrooms.

Nanducket apparel styles are inspired by classic design, with coastal colors and other elements, brought to life with quality construction and compelling details. Petal pink bubble rompers and dresses are made from a delicate cotton blend ideal for warm summer days. Vintage-inspired details like hand-smocking, flutter sleeves, and bow sashes ensure Nanducket – and its mission – will be passed down to future generations.
