Citron Jaune is a beautiful and ethical line of clothing for babies up until size 12, committed to making good and doing good!
Citron Jaune’s commitment to quality, uniqueness, and ethics shines through each item in their collection. The brand teams up with the wonderful seamstress and talented textile artisans of Madagascar to create one-of-a-kind garments with hand-made embroideries, crochet and knitting details. Offering primarily natural materials such as cotton and wool, the Citron Jaune brings to market items that are durable, breathable and gentle to the skin. Plus, they source their raw materials from sustainable farms in the region and across Europe!
We love a brand story that is committed to female empowerment and job creation, and Citron Jaune is doing just that while offering up an extremely lovely collection each season. We were excited to chat with the designer, Jenny, and learn more about her unique brand in our latest Designer Q&A.
What inspired the name of your label?
“Citron Jaune” literally yellow lemon in French, was taken from a souvenir that I have from a lemon tree garden in a quiet and warm summer. Stepping out among the sweet smell of this quiet place we strive to bring the same sweetness and the same beauty into all the clothes that we produce.
What made you want to design for children?
I personally like quality and handcrafted details clothes for my little ones, and I wanted to share it with other mums! We team up with the wonderful seamstress and talented textile women artisans of Madagascar to create one-of-a-kind garments with hand-made embroideries, crochet and knitting details.
What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
We believe that clothes made beautifully can bring additional happiness!
As an ethical and slow fashion brand, we believe that the little ones and their parents will appreciate the love and the patience that we put in our clothes, and we hope that our work will contribute to raising consciousness about the need to do better and fairer fashion.
What are the motivations or inspirations behind the designs?
At Citron Jaune, we pride ourselves on being a part of the slow fashion movement. We only release two collections a year and continuously edit our staple pieces to ensure each product in your wardrobe is timeless, elegant and made to last. Our commitment to quality, uniqueness, and ethics shines through each item in our collection.
Is there a style decade you are inspired by?
Not really.
What makes your label stand out in the industry?
We are a small brand that has its own workshop and since last season, we produce 95% of our pieces by ourselves. We thrive to become more sustainable and improve our ethical practices every day.
We believe that a new business model in fashion is possible, where a brand can offer high-end products that satisfy the most demanding customers while ensuring fair income and social support for its workers. We achieve by reinvesting part of our benefits in health and education schemes for our employees and offering fair wages for decent living conditions.
How does your design philosophy change when creating for boys vs girls?
Observing my children and others around me, I can tell that boys like easy-going pieces and girls like details and both will not compromise on comfort. When I create a style I always have those things in mind.
What do you have coming up that you are really excited about?
This season, we will introduce pieces for women as well. We are so excited and delighted to bring it back to you!
What is favourite item from the current collection?
One of our staple pieces: the cocotte dress! So easy to mix and match and perfect for any occasion!
