Designer Q&A, Senger Naturwelt

Organic Toy brand, Senger is designed by husband and wife, Sabine and Volker Senger. Handcrafted in Germany, their  products are not only cuddly toys, they are a piece of authentic and loving handwork. We love that the brand offers children a chance to find a “Senger friend” for life. Not only do they build friendships, and connections that will last a lifetime, but they bring back a sense of your own childhood, and smiles to adult faces.

We were excited to interview Volker Senger about his brand in our latest Designer Q&A!

What inspired the name of your label?

“Senger” is the family name of me, Volker Senger – for 30 years I’ve been the designer of all products inside our little brand. “Naturwelt” means “nature world” – every single product we’ve ever made since 1986 is absolutely eco-friendly.


What made you want to design for children?

As my mother owned a small sewing factory which was empty after she retired, I thought about manufacturing dolls together with my wife Sabine. Neither Sabine nor I were professional and experienced tailors, even though I was an educated tailor, I’ve never practiced. We started with basic dolls, unfortunately without any success. One day our nephew asked us to produce a doll with an animal head – this was the first milestone in the history of Senger Naturwelt.  


What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?

Being fair and ecological friendly. It’s not only the way how to process the materials, it’s rather about how long we stick to one design before updating it. Right now, we’ve never updated any item – our bestsellers have stayed the same for over 30 years now. Mostly I call it “sustainable design”.

What are the motivations or inspirations behind the designs?
Finding the perfect shape – it needs to fit exactly to the rest of the Senger family – we never follow any trend – we just do the next right thing.

Is there a style decade you are inspired by?
Maybe I’m still living in my early beginnings…

What makes your label stand out in the industry?
We stick to our principles without any change. People have been buying our products for such a long time for their children grandchildren and themselves– there is no need for change.

How does your design philosophy change when creating for boys vs girls?
We don’t divide between boys and girls – we just create our products for everyone who is not just looking for something – it’s for people like you and me, looking for “the right thing”.

What do you have coming up that you are really excited about?
I had a little help from a design student which created wonderful blankets with the faces of our products. The precision of design is just remarkable on those products. You can easily recognize the special shape of our products on all blankets.

What is your favourite item from the current collection?
The goose – I designed the white ones several years ago. Last year we came up with the grey one and all of them are adored by so many customers – from young to old and all over the world.
