Ming by Ming was created in 2016 by Canadian mom and designer Sarah Lo. The eco-friendly, ethical and sustainable line is the perfect choice for anyone who embraces a natural lifestyle. The collection is full of laid-back classics and essentials, like stylish hoodie sweaters and comfy cotton pants, all created with eco-friend materials and environmentally sound manufacturing practices.
We were excited to chat with Sarah about her cool new collection for Spring 2018 in today’s Designer Q&A.
What inspired the name of your label?
MING means bright, understanding, and aware. Both my son’s Chinese names include Ming – Sai Ming and Chi Ming. They exude the meaning; being understanding and aware of not only their surroundings but of the people within it. We try to bring this to all of our endeavours, mainly our Ming by Ming label.
Why did you choose to design for children?
I love shopping small and local for myself and my children. There are tons of kids brands out there that I just love, however, it always seemed hard to find ones that were plain and simple with some edge while also being made ethically and sustainably.
What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
To clothe children in sustainable, healthy, wearable and long lasting unique clothing, while focusing on the ethical and fair treatment of people and workers. 100% Made in Canada.
Why do you believe fashion/style is important for children?
I believe that even at a young age, it is important for children to be able to express themselves through many things – fashion and style being one of them. Children tend to be very adamant about what they want or do not want to wear. I feel that giving them options to feel comfortable is important, and with the abundance of quality brands and shops now available, it’s easier than ever to do that.
What are the motivations or inspirations behind the design? Cool and understated.
Is there a style decade you are inspired by? I love fashion as a whole. There are so many decades that inspire me, but I don’t think the style of the label comes from any specific decade. That might change through collections, but for now, our simple designs are probably reflective of many decades at some point. Simple staples tees don’t ever really go out of style.
How does your design philosophy change when creating for boy vs. girls? My designs don’t change a bit when creating for boys vs. girls – everything is gender neutral, unisex and looks equally as fabulous on both genders. I think it is so cool when boys and girls can rock the same outfits.
What do you have coming up that you are really excited about? I have some really exciting design ideas brewing for FW18. I am also super stoked about this specific collab with you guys (Poster Child) and one coming out with Luna Lookbook for SS18. I love being involved with such amazing talents and individuals that really understand the market and the lifestyle.
What is your favourite piece (for boys and girls) from the current collection?
Definitely the Fish Tail tee coming out now for SS18. It is made from the same super soft, super versatile Bamboo/Organic Cotton fabric as our capsule Edge Tee, but has a really cool fishtail at the back and gold accent threading on the sleeves and bottom. It just takes a classic tee that much further.
