Founded in 2007, Danish kid’s wear label MarMar Copenhagen offers up a cool and stylish line of clothing for boys and girls from newborn to fourteen years of age. Characterized by contrasts – country-chic and urban cool, luxurious and practical, old and new – each collection has options suitable for any and every occasion!
We’ve been following MarMar for years, and the line continues to impress each season with its sophisticated and chic personality, while expertly incorporating comfort and functionality kids need. We are excited to catch up with designer Marlene Anine Holmboe in our latest Q&A and learn a little more about her stunning collection.
What inspired the name of your label?
My siblings are Martin and Maria and creating clothes for both boys and girls, I thought it was cute to, in a way, honour them, our relationship and all our childhood memories. So the the brand name is the first three letters in each of our names, repeated twice. With the company being based in Copenhagen, that part came naturally.
Why did you choose to design for children?
Having designed for both women and children, I must say I´m fond of both and today MarMar Copenhagen also offer a range for women. I launched my label after becoming a mother myself, noticing a gap in the market for high quality, softly coloured basics and fashion seasonals. Designing for children offers a freedom playing with colours and making up my own unique trend universe, paired with great attention to functionality children´s wear command, which I thoroughly enjoy
What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
It is and has been from the beginning, to mix durable high quality basics with seasonal collections with a fashion edge. I love it when I see our basics being passed on and still looking great and always fitting in with the current collection.
What are the motivations or inspirations behind the designs?
I like to design collections, based on the thought of a child´s wardrobe. Often containing a variation of basics and everyday pieces, easy to wear to school; Mixing in party pieces and those eye-catching pieces, which children and parents alike, are naturally drawn to. That means offering quite an extensive range, which you can dress up and down.
The inspiration comes from old books and photos and circus from times past, adding both edge and a sense of quirkiness.
Is there a style decade you are inspired by?
Every season has a flavour of its own, but I´m always inspired by classic Scandinavian design from the 1920´s and 1950´s, where functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship and quality were the core values – it contains a simplicity I´m instinctively drawn to.
What makes your label stand out in the industry?
It must be the mix of our seasonal collections and our vast basic range. A range that grown over the past years and are now covering all of our Modal range, Leopard, Swimwear, Outerwear for all seasons, denim and socks amongst other things. Our basics are always available, season after season, allowing you to restock and matched with earlier pieces.
How does your design philosophy change when creating for boys vs girls?
It doesn´t really and I really love both boys and girls in MarMar Copenhagen.
What do you have coming up that you are really excited about?
Within our basic range, we have just launched Thermo outerwear and an incredibly soft newborn range that I really adore. For the AW16 collection I´m introducing exciting colours and prints, that I´m truly excited about. In addition and not least our Woman collection, with pieces I can´t find anywhere else.
What is/are your favourite item/s from the current collection?
From the summer collection, it must be our Denna dress in the amazing Bird print, inspired by an old tapestry. I´m lucky enough to have twin girls myself, creating lovely outfits from the collections every day. For myself I adore the Ona Woman Thermo jacket.
