Designer Q&A, Beanie & Bear

London based swimwear line Beanie & Bear was created by Noya Bebawi, a graphic designer, children’s illustrator and mother of 2! The label is full of mix-n-match goodness and delivers endless combinations for your little ones with bold character and a great attention to detail throughout the collection.

We love Beanie & Bear’s bright colours and ultra cool patterns and we were excited to ask them all our questions about their funky swim line. Read about it in this week’s Designer Q&A!

lookbook-modmedia-862-page-11579 What inspired the name of your label?
My kids! My daughters’ nickname is Beanie and my sons’ is Bear.

Why did you choose to design for children?
We spend a lot of our summers in Spain and Ibiza, and I spent one holiday too many looking at ill-fitting droopy draws! I just couldn’t find anything that really suited, or fitted, my kids properly so decided to have a go myself!

lookbook-modmedia-862-page-7301What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
Our mission is to banish Saggy-Bum Syndrome!

Creating high quality, durable pieces with a focus on perfect fit, we want to combine the aesthetic of great adult swimwear with a sense of the playful that will appeal to little people and their grown- ups alike.

Beanie & Bear is all about classic with a twist. The pieces are all super easy to wear and will bring back nostalgic memories of long summer days, dribbily ice creams and not having a care in the world!

lookbook-modmedia-862-page-7298Why do you believe fashion/style is important for children?
Fashion gives kids a chance to express their own style and individuality from a really young age. No two kids are the same, life is not ‘one size fits all’. I think its important that kids learn from day one that it is OK to be different. In fact, being different is great!

That is one of the reasons that all our pieces are mixable and matchable, with a lot being unisex to boot! You are guaranteed to find the perfect style, fit and colour combo for your perfect little individual.

What are the motivations or inspirations behind the design?
At the risk of sounding completely predictable and cheesy, I can honestly say my kids are definitely my inspiration. I want our collections to embody the playful innocence of being a child.

lookbook-modmedia-862-page-11589Is there a style decade you are inspired by?
I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and I think that definitely filters through into the designs. A love of neon that just won’t die!

How does your design philosophy change when creating for boy vs. girls?
It doesn’t. We aim to make easy to wear comfy pieces for both girls and boys that stand the test of time.

What do you have coming up that you are really excited about?
There is so much coming up that I am really excited about.

We are bringing out a range of gorgeous jersey pieces at the beginning of June. Fab unisex T’s, funky little dresses and a really great playsuit. All with our signature neon trims. There is also a girls’ one piece swimsuit in the pipeline. We are looking into widening our range of accessories too, so things are looking good!

lookbook-modmedia-862-page-11590What is your favourite piece (for boys and girls) from the current collection?

That’s way too difficult a question! The Yasmin Bum bikini bottom is super cute with the frilly back, and the Milo Bum boxer short is a clear classic. I love the pieces with the Fox illustrations on as Beanie drew them – very sweet!

I love them all, plus there are so many colour combinations which makes your question even trickier!
