Designer Q&A, Lilla Grey

In 2005, mother-daughter team Corrine and Norvella began leisurely designing and creating frocks and over-the-top bows for the youngest diva in their house. The passion quickly grew into a whole line of playful clothing for little girls!

Lilla Grey’s garments celebrate the innocence, purity and beauty of classical children’s wear; each item is constructed with care in their New Jersey home. Their latest collection – Mini Nior – offers the perfect balance of traditional silhouettes and modern applications in a colour palette perfect for holiday dressing.

Norvella answered our questions about her beautiful line for modern princesses.

1. Where did the name Lilla Grey originate?
The name “Lilla” comes from the lily flower, which is a symbol of purity, innocence and beauty. With a meaning so sweet and representative of our line, the name naturally stuck. The “Grey” comes from my obsession in working with neutral, muted tones- although it wouldn’t be too unusual to find some brightly colored prints speckled in our collections from time to time 😉

2. Why did you choose to design for children?
I love our half-pint clients – I love imagining and then creating trendsetting styles that are envied by their stylists, the parents. There’s just something so gratifying about seeing tailored jackets and asymmetrical silhouettes on mini fashion-lovers.

Their round bellies, awkward stances and cheesy smiles just complete the look. Kids are fun, and even more fun to dress.

3. What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
Classic wear for the modern princess- that’s our motto. We always strive to produce pieces that are practical, distinct and lovable. A goal of mine? I hope in a couple years’ time, Lilla Grey will be one of the names that come to mind when thinking of iconic kids fashion brands.

4. What are the motivations or inspirations behind the design? Is there a style decade that you are inspired by?
While I’m not necessarily inspired by any particular style decade, I’m inspired by classic looks; pleated skirts and dresses, peter-pan collars, high-waisted trousers. I like to add a slightly modern edge or twist to these classic elements.

5. What do you have coming up with Lilla Grey that you are really excited about?
Our spring/summer ’15 collection!! As I noted earlier, we don’t use bright colors often, but this upcoming collection is spilling with color, and I love it! Stay tuned for the January debut 😉

6. What is your favourite piece from the current collection?
Oh gosh, it’s so hard to choose only one. As cliché as it sounds, I’m in love with the way all of the Mini Noir pieces turned out. We worked with black materials for the first time with this collection, and now I’m certainly inclined to use the bold color more often!

But if I had to choose just 1 favorite piece, it’d be our Juliana dress. I’m a huge fan of silk organza- so dainty and chic- and as I just mentioned, a new fan of black for kiddos. So, black organza ruffles? Instantly obsessed!
