Two best friends, Carol and Alicia, moved from hectic New York City to laid back LA with a vision for a trendy and innovative clothing line for girls; Frankie & Sue is just that! The collection boasts fun and carefree garments in bold patterns that are anything but ordinary! We tracked down the busy pair and they answered all our questions about their chic girls collection.
Where did the name Frankie & Sue originate?
Frankie & Sue came from both of our middle names and how we wanted to offer clothing for all types of girls. Carol Franklin Duffy was always a tomboy growing up in her brothers hand me downs and loving to mix and match her clothes. Alicia Susan Wasberg was a total girly girl always in dresses and bows.
Why did you choose to design for children?
Alicia: I always knew I wanted to be a fashion designer but then my nephew Zachary was born my last year of high school & he and his younger brother Aidan are my world. I love them so much and decided I wanted to design clothes for kids.
Carol: I have always wanted to design clothing for kids.. I have always been really into fashion because my mother owned a clothing store. She has such a wonderful vintage collection. I always wanted kids to be able to wear super cool trendy clothes like I did growing up.
What is your brand’s mission statement or purpose?
We are a trendy bohemian girls clothing line based out of LA. Frankie & Sue is designed and owned by two graduates of children’s wear design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. The collection ranging from 2-8yr is driven by it’s prints & trendy silhouettes; as well as the ability to offer something for both the edgy tomboy & the polished girly girl. Individuality is the most important thing we can hold on to, without it we are all the same. Frankie & Sue prides itself of being sewn here not flown here by having all garments made in LA.
What are the inspirations or motivations behind your design? Is there a style decade that you are inspired by?
We are the product of our flower child hippie parents and always draw inspiration from that bohemian era. Moving from the east coast to the west coast has also really changed our own personal styles. Each season we search for an ethnic/cultural influence. For Fall’13 we found ourselves loving African prints and colours.
What do you have coming up in the future involving Frankie & Sue that you are excited about?
We are currently designing Fall ’14! In the past our collections have melded together with both styles but for Fall ’14 we are breaking out with a full “Frankie” collection and a full “Sue” collection that will still merchandise together.
Which is your favourite piece from your collection right now?
Carol: I love our signature Harem Pants. For Fall the Hidi Harem has a super dropped crotch and comfy smocked waist band with trendy cargo pockets.
Alicia: I love our Carmela Dress! I love mixing and matching prints and its is so full and girly and perfect for twirling.
With a playful mix of bright jewel tones and dynamic prints Frankie & Sue’s latest collection is sure to suit the tastes of every little princess or tomboy! Discover more about Frankie & Sue and shop the brand on their website www.frankieandsue.com
