Contemporary childrenswear brand, imo imo kids is designed by travel and beach lover, Mijin Kim. Specializing in romantic resort and beachwear, the brand offers outfits to be worn throughout summer holidays and beyond. The sophisticated designs are not only for a travel-ready wardrobe, but also for special occasions, conveying feminine loveliness through flower motif lace, ruffles, and embellishments. We love that imo imo kids presents a new approach to kids style with a delicate, modern accent and casual chic styling.
We were excited to interview Mijin Kim about her lovely brand in our latest Designer Q&A!
What inspired the name of your label?
Our name was inspired by my little niece and nephew who are my motivation all the time. ‘IMO’ means aunt in Korean, and they always called me twice ‘IMO IMO’ with lovely smiles. Whenever I was with them I thought I would like to design children’s clothing, with the love, as a gift to them. As my heart is melting with their love, I also want to express my love to them.
Why did you choose to design for children?
This is also because of my niece and nephew. I used to go shopping with my sister for my niece and nephew, but we were hard to find any unusual and unique pieces for them. I felt the industry of womenswear was really huge and diverse, while childrenswear was not enough yet. I started designing unique and stylish clothing that also kids could wear comfortably.
What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
Our mission is simple. We hope to be a child’s favourite brand when they are standing in front of their closets – for holidays or special days – and hope make memories with our clothing.
Why do you believe fashion/style is important for children?
Fashion is important for children because it has become one of the primary ways in which children express their personality and in which they distinguish themselves from those around them.
What are the motivations or inspirations behind the design?
Each collection is inspired by the experience and memories through the travelling. The artistic and impactful elements are all of our motivation; they can be beautiful nature or specific culture or lifestyle.
Our ‘Paint Play’ collection was inspired by the Wynwood Art Walls during our travelling in Miami. Our collection is reflected in its bright colours and oversized graphics from the Wynwood Art Walls. These unique elements are reinterpreted and reflected in our design.
What is your favourite piece from the current collection?
My favourite piece is definitely Olivia Jumpsuit in our collection. Of course, it is our best selling item and I think it is the best design representing our brand. Olivia Jumpsuit is a comfortable and joyful design for little girls, but also it looks really stylish and feminine.
