Recess NYC aims to create unique, stylish and one-of-a-kind baby shoes that will have parents’ ditching their ordinary booties for the limited collection of luxuriously crafted and sophisticated boots by Recess.
The New York label just launched their first collection of styles that – just like recess – won’t last long! Each pair of boots are made with extra soft 100% genuine leather, fitted with light memory foam insoles for extra cushion and out-soled with a protective rubber.
We are excited to get to know the label better with a designer Q&A with Recess NYC’s co-designer Barrett Williams.
What inspired the name of your label?
There was no ‘rhyme or reason’ behind it. The word “recess” invokes some of the earliest and most nostalgic memories that I had as a child, though I was a bit older than the babies that wear recess shoes.
Why did you decide to design for children?
Honestly, it was all my girlfriends idea and concept. I have never been involved in the fashion industry. The only industry knowledge that I have is from being around her. At first I was a bit skeptical, as I couldn’t visualize a leather ‘biker boot’ – equipped with lead free studs – on a new-born baby. Then, once I saw the final sample, I was blown away. At that point, I knew that we were onto something.
What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
The goal and mission? To create exclusive baby shoes that disrupt the kids fashion industry. Is it conventional to sell baby biker boots and hand embroidered, navajo inspired, genuine cow leather baby moccasins? Probably not… But we are going to do it anyway. I think it is a refreshing concept and will resonate with a lot of people.
How does your design process differ when designing for boys vs girls?
We think it’s all about being unisex. The high-end baby market is niche enough, without cutting our target customer base in half.
What do you have coming up that you are really exited about?
We have a new collection that we are in the midst of producing. Stay tuned for the launch this winter – with a very special partner. Spoiler alert: It is a boot collaboration with another luxury children’s brand – which I’m almost positive you’ve heard of…
What is your favourite piece from your current collection?
Well it’s a close call but I’d have to go with the biker boot. Honestly, have you seen anything like this before? I almost want a pair for myself, but I would probably need a Harley first…
